Breaking the Barrier: My Journey to Embracing Journaling
Share
I’ll be honest—journaling has never been my strong suit. Writing about anything else? Sure, I’m game. But when it comes to putting my personal thoughts on paper, I freeze. My struggle with journaling goes all the way back to high school.
Back then, I wasn’t in the best headspace, and I viewed journaling as an invasion of my privacy. I remember one particular assignment in my English class: keep a daily journal for one month and turn it in at the end of the assignment. I flat-out refused to do it. Morally, I believed my thoughts were mine alone, and I wasn’t about to risk someone reading them and judging me for what was going on in my mind. I’d convinced myself that my raw, unfiltered thoughts might land me in trouble—like a one-way ticket to a mental health ward.
Needless to say, I took an “F” on that assignment.
Fast forward to today, and I’m in a much better place mentally and emotionally. Yet, despite the progress I’ve made, the struggle to journal remains. Something about sitting down with a blank page and diving into my inner world still feels like uncharted territory.
But I’ve learned that journaling doesn’t have to be intimidating or deeply confessional. It can be as simple as checking in with myself—no pressure, no judgment.
To help others who may feel the same way, I’ve created a few gentle prompts:
- What is one sensation or emotion my body is holding onto right now?
- If my body could speak, what would it tell me it needs today?
- What is one way I can honor my body’s needs this week?
These prompts are less about uncovering hidden truths and more about small acts of self-awareness. Journaling, I’m realizing, can be whatever you need it to be.
If you give these prompts a try, I’d love to hear your thoughts. What resonated with you most? And did they help ease you into journaling like they have for me? Want more journaling tips? Check out our blog post Your Journal: A Personal Sanctuary.
