Mabon - the Autumn Equinox
As we approach tomorrow’s Autumn Equinox, I’ve been reflecting on this time of balance—between light and dark, action and rest. Even though the summer warmth is hanging on as usual for our area, the signs of autumn are quietly creeping in—the leaves starting to change, a slight crispness in the morning air, and those apples and pumpkins are ready for harvest.
I have to say, autumn is my favorite season. I love the riotous color of the leaves changing and the music they make crunching underfoot.
Mabon, the Autumn Equinox, is a special time for slowing down, taking stock of our lives, and finding gratitude for all we’ve accomplished—whether it’s a literal harvest or the personal growth we’ve experienced. It’s a moment to pause and reconnect with the rhythm of the seasons.
As we move closer to October, there’s a sense of nostalgia in the air, as if we’re in a quiet place where time stands still. It’s a precious break between summer and the frosts that are coming soon.
The season of autumn calls us to prepare our minds, bodies, and souls for what is to come in wintertime. This can mean getting outdoors more often, going on walks in nature, or hosting an Autumn celebration filled with rich traditions and rituals the way our ancestors celebrated life together with the rhythms of each season.
In the autumn season, nature experiences senescence—the phase in aging when it lets go of its old forms—and so do we. That’s what makes this season so special: it gives us an opportunity to prepare for winter and say goodbye to parts of ourselves that are no longer useful or relevant. When I observe autumn’s natural process of aging gracefully and letting go, I am able to delve into those concepts and unearth ways to embrace the season of senescence within myself, my relationships, and my work.
